It’s probably fair to say that electrically assisted bikes (e-bikes) have an image problem. Many people associate them with excessive speeds and a risk of fires. This has arisen as a result of modified software and batteries being fitted to e-bikes that can then travel faster than the mandated 15 mph and do not require pedalling. A new industry led initiative is seeking to address the issue.

The need for education on this issue is clearly demonstrated by a YouGov poll where the public were asked if they could distinguish between a legal and illegal e-bike. It turned out that 84% could not!

The campaign allows consumers to gain confidence in their purchase of an e-bike by highlighting brands that are verified with the mark “E-Bike Positive Verified Brand” on product packaging and marketing materials. This assures buyers that the bike is road legal and tested for safety.

Given the benefits of e-bikes, which can be credited with many older riders in particular returning to cycling or discovering cycling later in life, we wish this new campaign every success.
