A section of cycleway that forms a safer route from Pinner to Harrow is nearing completion. One part looks almost done with just the top surface to be finished, whilst another bit further along is still awaiting the adding of tarmac.

The completed cycleway will link with quieter side roads and another section of cycleway in North Harrow to give cyclists an alternative to staying on the busy Pinner Road with heavy traffic on a major bus route.

An almost complete section

Delays in completing the works have resulted in a prolonged period of traffic delays as on the less developed part, only one lane of the road is in use.

The cycleway is raised above the road, and separated from an adjacent footpath by a curved kerbstone

Angry posters on Nextdoor complained about the narrowing of the road, with others commenting that noone is ever seen cycling in the area so there is no demand. Almost a third of the 59 posts were from one irate individual, but the sentiments were nearly all negative. Whether this will settle down once the traffic starts flowing again and the completed cycleway is in use remains to be seen.

Of course posters on Nextdoor don’t represent the full spectrum of opinions in the community, but it is something to bear in mind here in Hillingdon if we ever get to the same place: delays in completing works can cause even more anger amongst some residents already opposed in principle to cycle infrastructure development.
